Grand Canyon - Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek - June 27, 2011 - Page 14
ll) Then at our camp below Pipe Creek, the conflict became physical between Wesley and Glenn. We had arrived at the camp and decided to move the rafts downstream a few hundred feet to a better spot. The current was swift there and no other camps were shown in the guide book further downstream above Horn Creek rapid, and we didn’t want to run Horn (8) that late in the day. So I decided we should line the rafts down to the new spot. The shore consisted of boulders and tammies and was hard to walk on, so I had four men move each raft one at a time. One man was in the raft, two held the bow line, and one pushed the raft out from the shore. No one objected to this procedure, and we took turns working the different positions. We moved two rafts this way, and it went reasonably well. For the third raft, Wesley and Glenn were at the raft and David was higher up on the bank. Wesley got in the raft, and I am told that Glenn then decided to move the raft with just the three of them rather than waiting for a fourth person (probably me) to get there. I am told that Wesley insisted that they wait for someone else to get there and that Glenn ignored this and started moving the raft with Wesley in it and that an argument ensued over how to line the boats that led to Wesley getting out of the raft and into Glenn’s face, Glenn pushing Wesley away (David’s words) or grabbing him (Wesley’s words), and Wesley striking Glenn in the face. Glenn said that Wesley punched him, and Wesley said that he struck with an open hand. Wesley described his actions as being in self-defense and an effort to get away from Glenn, and Glenn described the act as Wesley attacking him without provocation. David said that he saw the physical contact and supported Glenn’s story of the physical acts. If David was close enough to hear what was said, he didn’t mention it to me. Wesley had never hit anyone before that I am aware of. Glenn threatened to press charges against Wesley for assault. I had a private conversation with Glenn and told him of our plans to separate him and Wesley. He agreed to what we had planned. I also told him that I would let him row whatever rapids he wanted, including Lava, provided he did not flip a raft before then.
mm) After the physical confrontation, I immediately got Mike and David involved in managing how to proceed and we got everyone’s story and came up with a course of action for moving forward. We decided to keep Wesley and Glenn on separate rafts for the rest of the trip and to have them work on separate tasks at camp. In the interest of proceeding in a peaceful manner, Mike and I asked Wesley to apologize to Glenn, which he did. Glenn initially accepted the apology and shook Wesley’s hand when Wesley offered it, but then insisted that Wesley agree to Glenn’s version of what happened. Wesley refused to do that and Glenn turned his back and walked away. From that point forward, through the end of the trip, from my perspective Wesley was agreeable with everyone and made many efforts to get along with the other people on the trip, including Glenn. Both Wesley and Glenn discussed possibly leaving the trip and hiking out, but both decided to stay. Mike tried to talk Wesley out of hiking out on the grounds that it was unsafe and his mother would worry. I supported Mike’s arguments, and also thought that Wesley would learn more from facing and dealing with this problem than from running away. Glenn would have had to have asked Mike or I for directions in order to hike out, and did not do so, as far as I know, although we certainly would have given him the information had he asked.
nn) The next day, we did the big rapids below Phantom Ranch. David’s shoulder was bothering him, so Glenn rowed David’s raft and Wesley rowed the kitchen boat. It seemed to me that we all got along fine scouting and running the big rapids. All of the boatmen scouted the rapids and discussed how to run them. But later it seemed like a division occurred within the group involving other members of the group besides Wesley and Glenn. Some people seemed to side with Glenn and didn’t like being around Wesley. One person, for example, announced that he would not ride on a raft with Wesley. Others seemed to side with Wesley and saw everything that Glenn did or said as being an insult, passive aggressive behavior, or counter productive to the safety of members of the group that he did not like.
