Verde River from Sycamore Creek to Lower Tapco River Access
This was a good flow for our first time, but if I had my choice of flows for next time, I would prefer more but would not want it to be too pushy. I would like to try 100-200 cfs, but I don’t know how likely it is to catch it in that range. I would be more concerned about 300 cfs but it might be a lot of fun. I scaled off the map that this section was about 11 river miles and Walt said 10-12. Walt verified with his “Flag friends” that we could drive down to the river at Sycamore Creek. The last bit of road was steep, loose, and fairly challenging in the 4runner and Mark’s Explorer but we never had to stop, back up, or get out of the vehicles. Mark and I walked the difficult part in about 20 minutes when we went back to get the vehicles at the end of the day and removed a few loose rocks that were sticking up. I used 4 Low both directions and 1st gear on the steep parts going down and locked the central differential on the way up but never heard or felt any metal hit any rocks. The rocks seemed sharp on the tires, but we did not get any flats. Photo credit: Mark Jibilian
