Grand Canyon - Lees Ferry to Diamond Creek - June 27, 2011 - Page 16

rr) Conclusions - Setting aside the conflict between people, this was a very good trip. The high flow, green water for most of the trip, and opportunity to experience severe monsoon weather provided a unique experience unlikely to be duplicated in the lives of the trip participants. In addition, this trip was a safe one, for the most part, with no raft flips or significant injuries, a goal that we worked very hard to accomplish. For my family, this was a rare opportunity for all of us to be together for a vacation. The same may be true for the part of Mike’s family that went on this trip. As the kids get older, it becomes more and more difficult to get them together. For Ted, this was probably the first time that he would have been old enough and skilled enough in a kayak to consider kayaking the big rapids in the Grand Canyon, and was an opportunity to advance his big water kayaking skills that would be difficult to match. For David, Tracy, and Glenn, this was their first opportunity and a rare opportunity to row a boat through the Grand Canyon, and came at a time in their rafting careers when they were first ready for this challenge. For Tom, it was a rare and special opportunity to raft the Grand Canyon on a non-commercial trip with friends that he knew well and trusted. In addition, for David, Tracy, Glenn, and Tom, this was an opportunity to see how food and equipment is managed for a long river trip, which will help them to organize their own long river trips in the future, should they choose to do so. For Michelle, Mike and I, it was our first opportunity to lead a trip through the Grand Canyon without the benefit of a participant with more Grand Canyon experience. We had to find our own lines through the rapids, decide where to camp, decide how far to go each day, manage the unanticipated problems that came along during the trip, and make many critical decisions without the oversight and guidance of the skilled and experienced leaders that were on our previous trips. Moreover, we did a lot of great hiking, saw a lot of wild animals, and saw a lot of great scenery on this trip.
