Day 3 - Spencer Canyon to Pearce Ferry
The newly formed Pearce Ferry Rapid is not trivial nor easy. If running left of the island, first there are 3-4 large haystacks that are offset from each other in both the downstream direction and in the angle they present to the boater. Once passed those, there is a treacherous
reflection/seduction wave
that is nearly 90 degrees opposite from the haystack flow. The bottom of the reflection wave ends in a true
boat-eating hole
. If going right of island, there is a tricky cross-current move to
a sharp drop-off followed by multiple holes
. Our group was 0 for 2 on trying the right side.
