Fossil Creek - September 2010 - Part III
Further down, Ted got some vertical motion going surfing in a hole in a chute. It flipped him and his paddle got stuck between some rocks. He pulled the skirt and was able to swim free. Jorge was able to pull his paddle out. We each took a turn surfing in that hole, but it was strong and was scary with rock on both sides. We ran from just below Granddaddy falls to below the power house falls without portaging or dragging our boats, but we often got stuck on rocks or on bedrock and had to push ourselves off or over with our hands. At the end, we all ran the power house falls on the right, about a 9-foot final drop after a smaller drop. Ted and I scouted it first, but did not get there soon enough to see Jorge and Antony run it. When Ted and I ran it, Jorge spotted us from the rock in the middle. He had to help me because I pitonned on the drop just above the split and was not straight. Jorge went back and ran the left chute as well. On the way out, we stopped and climbed a crag on the left side of the road, going up a SE arête and down a N arête. It was exposed and challenging without ropes, and was a beautiful climb on sharp granite. Ted enjoyed the day a lot and wanted to come back next week. He did really well in his Sidekick. I was happy at the end of the day, but a little rattled. However, none of us were injured at all, and none of the impacts that I had generated particularly high forces. We left Jorge’s before 7:00 am and were to camp Verde for an early dinner at about 3:00 pm. We probably got home around 5 pm. We had left early in order to get a parking spot. Rangers were ticketing people who parked along the road. I was comfortable in shirt sleeves and the water was not cold.
